Perimenopause & Nutrition: What the Authorised Claims Cover

Perimenopause — the years leading up to menopause — is one of the most significant transitions a woman's body goes through. It often arrives without warning and is frequently dismissed. It is also a stage where consistent daily nutrition genuinely matters, for reasons that are well established.

What perimenopause is

Perimenopause typically begins in a woman's forties, though it can start in the late thirties, and lasts anywhere from two to twelve years. Oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate unpredictably before declining. It ends with menopause, defined as twelve consecutive months without a period.

It is a normal life stage, not an illness.

Common experiences

Women commonly report irregular periods, hot flushes and night sweats, disturbed sleep, mood changes, difficulty concentrating, joint aches, changes in body composition, low energy, and changes to hair, skin and nails.

These are experiences, not a checklist for a product. No food or supplement may claim to address them, and this article does not. What follows is separate: the nutrients that carry authorised EU claims relevant to this stage of life, and what those claims actually permit.

Why the nutritional picture changes

As oestrogen declines, its role in maintaining bone density changes. Bone health becomes a longer-term consideration, and that is where several authorised nutrient claims are directly relevant.

Bones

  • Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones (authorised EU health claim) — particularly relevant in Ireland, where sunlight is limited much of the year
  • Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones (authorised EU health claim)
  • Calcium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones (authorised EU health claim)
  • Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function (authorised EU health claim)

Energy and mind

  • Iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue (authorised EU health claim)
  • Vitamin B12 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to the normal functioning of the nervous system (authorised EU health claims)
  • Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function (authorised EU health claim)
  • Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity and to normal psychological function (authorised EU health claims)

Immunity, hair, skin and nails

  • Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system (authorised EU health claim)
  • Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the maintenance of normal hair and nails (authorised EU health claims)
  • Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and nails and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress (authorised EU health claims)
  • Biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and skin (authorised EU health claims)

The rest of the picture

Nutrition is one part. Resistance exercise for bone and muscle, sleep, and speaking to a GP or menopause specialist about your own situation all matter more than any supplement. If symptoms are significantly affecting your quality of life, that conversation is the right first step — there are effective medical options and a supplement is not a substitute for them.

Please note: Me'Oria is not recommended during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or when actively trying to conceive without first consulting your GP. Me'Oria is a food supplement in liquid form under EU Directive 2002/46/EC. One 250ml can per day. Not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Intended for adults.

Authorised health claims under Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 and Regulation (EU) No 432/2012. Botanicals are included as carefully selected traditional ingredients and are not the subject of these authorised claims. This article is general nutritional information and is not medical advice.
